There are many groups claiming to support research on dolphins and these claims are often enough to attract considerable financial support from a well-meaning public. However, many of these organizations actually do very little or no marine mammals research. Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), are protected by European law, but in order to develop effective protection guidelines, education and research is necessary to find out much more about the dolphins, and the pressures they face. The Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute (BDRI) in Sardinia ( Italy ), concentrates its efforts on the study of these animals because they are predators at the top of their food chain. Their well-being therefore provides an excellent indication of the health of the entire ecosystem on which they, and we, depend. BDRI members seek to contribute to the understanding and cetaceans conservation, expand the public's knowledge and concern for our marine environment, and add to the knowledge base of bottlenose dolphins through the scientific analisys of collected field data. One of the core aims of the BDRI is to find out more about wild cetaceans (dolphins and whales) through different non-invasive (that does not disturb or harm the animals) research techniques.
